Meal Plan & Dietary Accommodations

About Meal Plan & Dietary Accommodations

Lyon College seeks to engage students with disabilities in all aspects of college life, including dining experiences. For students who reside on campus, dining services are an important part of residential life and are included with Room and Board fees.

Occasionally, students have special dietary needs and require an accommodation to the Meal Plan in the form of a special diet. Most often, these needs can be met by Lyon College Dining Services. Exemptions from the Meal Plan are rare. They are made solely for documented health conditions that require special medically and necessitated diets that cannot be accommodated by Dining Services. In the rare instance that Dining Services is unable to provide a reasonable dietary accommodation, the student is granted an exemption and Room and Board fees will be adjusted.

Lyon College has established procedures to ensure that students with documented disabilities have access to reasonable on-campus meal plan accommodations. Students should allow adequate time for application review and accommodation considerations.

Procedures for Students Requesting Meal Plan Exemption

To request an exemption to the Meal Plan, please complete the following steps. Note that an exemption will not be considered until a meeting is held with the manager of dining services and they are not able to reasonably accommodate the student.

  • The student should meet with the manager of Dining Services to discuss dietary restrictions. The student can arrange for this meeting or the Office of Academic Support & Accessibility can help arrange it.
  • After meeting with the manager of Dining Services and it is determined that Dining Services is unable to accommodate the student's dietary restrictions, the student should complete an online request using the Accommodate Disabilities Portal; if the student already receives an accommodation and this is an additional request, they should submit a Supplemental Request in the Disabilities Portal.

  • Ask for your health care provider to complete documentation to support your request. Documentation must be provided by a medical professional who is trained and qualified to assess the substantially limiting condition. Click here for guidance on required supporting documentation.
