Before submitting an IRB proposal (or renewal form), the Principal Investigator (and all study personnel working directly or indirectly with participants) must complete Human Research Protection Foundational Training with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Proof of ethics training must also be submitted to Lyon College’s IRB before submitting a proposal. Project proposals (including new and continuing) submitted without proof of ethics training for all personnel will be returned without review.
You can access Human Research Protection Foundational Training by navigating to the following website: https://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/education-and-outreach/online-education/human-research-protection-training/index.html
The HHS program includes five lessons and takes approximately 4-6 hours to complete. These lessons are FREE. As you complete each lesson, you will be prompted to provide your name and date of completion for the lesson certificate. When prompted, enter your name, completion date, and hit “Print Certificate”. You can select “Microsoft Print to PDF” to save the certificate directly to your computer. Ensure you have successfully saved each lesson’s certificate before moving on to the next lesson. The IRB cannot approve your training if you are missing certificates, as the HHS does not retain your records. You must submit all five completion certificates before submitting a project proposal for review.
Your ethics training completion date will be the day you submit all five completion certificates using this Laserfiche form. You will also receive an email confirmation that includes this date. Please keep this date for your records, as you will need it to complete the Research Protocol Review Application and/or your Research Protocol Renewal Application.
Proof of Human Research Protection Foundational Training with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is submitted through Laserfiche. A link to this form can be found below. Do not exit the form until you have completed all the required sections and submitted your proposal. Progress on your form will not be saved.
