Are you interested in a military career? Why not gain an education while working toward commissioning as an officer in the U.S. Army, Army Reserves, or National Guard? Lyon College now offers a military science concentration through its memorandum of agreement with the Arkansas State University (ASU) Department of Military Science and Leadership. Through the courses, you will learn interpersonal communication skills, ethical decision-making, time management, and managerial skills in addition to the tactical aspect. You do not have to contract with the Army in order to take the introductory military science courses, but advanced courses require a commitment beyond graduation.
Many of the students in the military science course are part of the new Lyon College ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) Program - Scots Detachment. ROTC members can apply for full-tuition scholarships from the Army National Guard, which can be stacked with other scholarships, as well as a monthly stipend for books and living expenses. The leadership skills and experience gained from military science courses are valuable for any career, not just military service.

Students can participate in Lyon College ROTC, a four-year program that trains future officers of the United States Army, Army Reserves, or National Guard. Cadets who have prior service and have completed basic combat training are only required to take the junior- and senior-level courses. Physical fitness training is a required part of the ROTC curriculum. Additionally, a two-hour lab is conducted each week to put classroom knowledge into practical application.
For more information on the required courses for a Military Science concentration, view our courses page.
ROTC contracted students can pursue the major of their choice at Lyon and are required to develop an academic plan with the assistance of college faculty and ROTC instructors. Upon the completion of their required military service the Lyon graduate will find that the leadership and organizational skills developed during their time in the Army or National Guard provide a competitive edge in the post-graduate job market. Additionally, depending upon the area of interest, the Army can help pay for graduate programs in specific fields.
