The theatre arts major, at its core, fosters the development of interpersonal communication, written communication, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. These skills apply to virtually any career a student wishes to pursue.
Dramatic art represents the culmination of all arts put forth for the purpose of advancing human interaction, reflecting and challenging broader culture, and fostering a firmer sense of the individual self. Students investing in the study of dramatic art will develop skills in oral communication, research methods, interpersonal relationships, and team building collaboration. In addition, students will develop skills in the critical evaluation of text and performance in a variety of perspectives including theoretical, cultural, and historical as a means of better understanding the world around them.
The theatre program at Lyon is student-centered. Students are permitted to engage in productions in ways that both challenge and enhance their skills. Whether performing, writing, directing, designing, or working backstage in various capacities, students have the opportunity to create theatre virtually from the moment they arrive on campus and throughout their four years. Class sizes are small, so students are given individual attention at a level they would not experience at a large university.
Associate Professor of Theatre Dr. Fonzie Geary and Assistant Professor of Art and Theatre Maggie Gayle
To be involved in theatre on campus, a student only needs to express interest to the theatre faculty. The most obvious way to become involved is through participation in a theatre production. Our program stands open to all students regardless of major. Any Lyon students willing to commit the time and effort can participate in our productions.
"I would say I love the personal connections and relationships I have been able to build with both students and faculty." -Wylie Greer
