Prospective students and their families often have the same questions about what it will be like for them or their child to come to Lyon and live in the residence halls. Please browse the most frequently asked questions below.
Lyon is a residential college. Single students under the age of 21 years who are not veterans must either reside in College-owned housing, commute daily from their parents’ primary residence no more than forty-five miles from the campus or receive a written exemption from the Associate Dean of Students
To qualify for an automatic exemption, a student must be 21 years old on or before the last day to add a class for the semester in which an exemption is desired, and the student must not have submitted a housing application and contract for that semester. Students who are 21 years of age and submit a housing application and contract must request an exemption if they subsequently wish to void the housing agreement. A student who is automatically exempt from the Lyon College residency policy will generally not lose any financial aid due to off-campus residency. Students who do not qualify for an automatic exemption from the residency policy and who are granted an exemption may lose up to 30% of any Lyon institutional scholarship(s) and/or grant(s) they have been awarded.
The Dean of Students must approve any exception to these policies.
Returning and incoming Lyon Students can apply for housing by filling out the Lyon College Housing Application.
Each year, Lyon offers current Lyon students who plan on returning the next fall the opportunity to participate in room selection. During this time, students may select a residence hall as their fall housing assignment.
All new Lyon students will receive information about applying for housing online upon being accepted to the College.
Students can share their roommate codes with people they'd like to room with, and that's how roommate groups are formed. Students must start and complete an application before they can input the code to send an invitation to the person they'd like to room with. The roommate codes are found at the top right of the screen. It'll read:
Student First and Last Name
Your roommate code: abcdef123
After logging into the housing website, you’ll need to go to the "Roommates" tab to send a roommate invitation. Please make sure you and your preferred roommate select the same building preferences.
Lyon College will only offer medical single rooms regarding on-campus housing. All medical single rooms will be approved by the Director of Academic Support and Accessibility. To begin the process, please complete the form below.
Medical Single Housing Application
Community-style bathrooms are single-gender bathrooms shared with all residents on the floor. Housekeeping maintains these bathrooms.
Suite-style bathrooms are bathrooms between two rooms that residents of those rooms maintain.
Pod-bathrooms are a set of individual bathrooms that are grouped together in a “pod” in the hallway. Each pod bathroom is for private use, and residents are able to lock the door to the bathroom upon entering the space. Pod bathrooms are equipped with shower and toilet fixtures.
Residents must supply their own cleaning supplies. Assigned bathrooms are single bathrooms that might be across the hallway or around a corner and are assigned to up to four residents. Maintenance maintains these bathrooms. The College supplies toilet paper to all student bathrooms.
When deciding on what to bring to college, it's always a good ideato contact your roommate and compare notes. For example, decide which one of you will bring a TV and which one will bringa refrigerator. Thiswill help to avoid having two of everything when one is enough.
If the prospect of packing everything is daunting, always remember that there is a Walmart, Dollar General, and plenty of shopping options right here in Batesville. You can buy some of what you need when you get here, which will save space when packing.
If you have questions regarding whether an item is appropriate, feel free to contact the Office of Residence Life.
Below is a list of strictly prohibited items in residence hall rooms!
Halogen lamps of any kind
Personal wireless router
Non-UL-approved extension cords/plugs/adaptors
Candles, incense
Cooking equipment including, but not limited to, electric frying pans, grills, toasters, toaster ovens, crock pots, slow cookers, microwaves, griddles, deep fryers, etc.
Window air conditioner
Weapons including but not limited to martial arts equipment, guns, air rifles, ammunition, knives, slingshots, and orby guns
Animals /pets, except service animals and Student Life-approved pets, and fish in aquariums of 10 gallons or less.
All residence hall and apartment room dimensions are available ineach Hall-specific page.
All room measurements are approximate.
All mattresses in the Lyon College residence halls are Twin XL mattresses.
You may decorate your room in any way that does not permanently change the room's structure.
For example, a number of students contact their roommates before arriving to decide on a color scheme for their room, oftentimes purchasing matching bed linens. Additionally, family photos, posters, and artwork are all great ways to personalize a space. You may hang items such as these on the wall using masking tape or some other low tack tape or putty that doesn't damage the wall surface. Nails, screws, hooks, etc., are prohibited in room walls, ceilings, and furniture.
Free-standing bookshelves, futons, easy chairs, etc., are other great ways to bring your own style into the room. Keep in mind that the rooms are limited in size, and although students creatively find ways to add furniture to the existing college furniture, space is at a premium.
All residence hall rooms come furnished. Each room (except those designated as singles) contains two twin beds, two desks, two desk chairs, two closets, and two dressers.College furnishings must remain in the space to which they are allocated.
Lyon College does not assume any legal obligation or responsibility for personal injuryor loss of and/ordamage to personal property.Students and their families are strongly encouraged to check with their home owner's insurance carrier.
Often, a home owner's policy covers loss of personal property while a student is away at college. If it doesn't, we suggest you talk with your insurance agent to add a policy rider to your existing home owner's policy.
Students and their families may also look into securing renter's insurance to cover loss and/or damage to personal property. In either case, it is the student's responsibility to secure appropriate insurance to cover possible losses.

Move-in is an exciting time, but long before you pack your car, we've got a small checklist for you to conquer. These are the four essential Becoming a Scot tasks that must be completed to ensure your move-in goes smoothly:
FAFSA®: If you have not done so, complete the FAFSA®. It's the first step to securing financial aid opportunities.
Lyon College Housing Form: If you haven't done so, complete your housing form here. You will use the Resident tab to access the application.
Business Office Clearance: Contact Jill Varner at (870) 307-7322 orjill.varner@lyon.edu to arrange a remittance plan.
