February is Black History Month, and the Lyon College campus communityis celebrating with a special programming hosted by the Black Student Association throughout the month.

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of the accolades, achievementsand successes of Black/African Americans. It also is a time to honor and recognize the central and significant role that African Americans have and continue to play in U.S. history.

Each Wednesday in February, the BSA will host Market Wednesday for Entrepreneurs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Edwards Commons. Students, faculty and staff are invited to showcase their businesses. Applications are available in BSA advisor and Executive Director of TRIO Dr. Branndii Peterson’s office in Room 130 of the Lyon Business and Economics Building.

The month-long celebration will include an alumni panel discussion on Friday, Feb. 9, at 5 p.m. in the Maxfield Room on the ground floor of Edwards Commons. Special guests will include Alexis Whitley, Kendrea Benjamin, Jamie Diaz, and Rick Everett. Pizza will be served.

On Tuesday, Feb. 13, there will be a Black History Trivia Night at 6 p.m. in Patterson Dining Hall on the main level of Edwards Commons. Prizes will be awarded.

There will be a luncheon celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 11:30 a.m. in Patterson Dining Hall in Edwards Commons. The community is invited and can RSVP at https://form.jotform.com/223475208972058.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, there will be an open mic night at 7 p.m. in the Maxfield Room on the ground floor of Edwards Commons. Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to participate in or come to enjoy the poetry, songs and spoken word presentations. There will be a cash cube with opportunities to win cash and coupons from the Lyon Den, Salty Dog and Sonic.

On Thursday, Feb. 29, there will be a Movie Night at 7 p.m. in the Maxfield Room on the ground floor of Edwards Commons.
