Symphonic Wind Ensemble

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) at Lyon College is an exciting opportunity for students who love music and want to perform with wind and percussion instruments. This ensemble is perfect for those who play woodwind instruments like the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, and brass instruments such as trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba. We welcome percussionists and electric bass players to join our vibrant musical community. Additionally, we have spots for two honors piano students who must audition for these coveted positions. When not playing piano, these students will also perform percussion roles, enhancing their skills and contributions to the ensemble.

Rehearsals for the SWE occur twice a week, allowing members to explore various musical pieces and styles. Students perform at four to six concerts throughout the academic year, showcasing their talents and hard work. Participation in the ensemble requires an audition, which determines membership and chair placement, ensuring that each student can shine in their role. Whether you're a woodwind, brass, percussionist, or aspiring pianist, the SWE offers a rich and fulfilling musical experience to enhance your artistic journey.

LC Jazz Orchestra (LCJO)

The LC Jazz Orchestra (LCJO) is an exciting 17-piece big band that immerses students in various musical styles, including Jazz, Rock, Fusion, and Latin music. This ensemble offers a unique opportunity for students to explore improvisation and different performance techniques within a supportive environment. Rehearsing twice a week, students dive into a diverse repertoire that enhances their musical skills and prepares them for annual performances at four to six concerts. Participation in the LCJO requires students to audition, ensuring they are dedicated and ready to contribute to the ensemble's dynamic sound.

The LCJO comprises a range of instruments that create its vibrant sound. Woodwind players can join by playing the Alto, Tenor, or Baritone Saxophone. Brass musicians can perform on Trumpet, Trombone, or Bass Trombone. The rhythm section is crucial to the band's energy, featuring instruments such as the Drum Set, Auxiliary Percussion, Piano, Guitar, and Electric Bass. Instrumental Chamber Ensembles in Music

These ensembles can vary in size, typically ranging from 2 to 16 members, and they explore a wide variety of musical genres, including jazz, rock, and classical music. Students meet weekly for independent rehearsals and receive additional coaching from music faculty, helping them refine their skills and learn from experienced musicians. Some examples of ensembles include the Beginning Band, Flute Choir, Woodwind Duos, Harmonie Ensemble, Jazz Combos, and even unique groups like the African Drum Ensemble and Mallet Ensembles.

In addition to enhancing their musical talents, students in chamber ensembles are encouraged to take on more leadership responsibilities and engage in group interaction. This hands-on experience promotes self-discovery and collaboration among members. If an ensemble shows significant progress, it may be rewarded with an Honors Recital Spot and have the chance to tour or perform as Lyon College Music Ambassadors. Percussion Ensemble

The Percussion Class and Ensemble is an exciting opportunity for students passionate about music and rhythm. Participants delve into contemporary genres and explore world music, body percussion, and unique, nontraditional instruments, much like those used in the famous production "Stomp." This diverse approach helps build a well-rounded musical education for every student.

In this ensemble, students rehearse two times a week, which allows them to engage with an eclectic repertoire and prepare for four to six performances each year. These concerts provide valuable experience and showcase the group's talents, enriching each student's musical journey. To ensure a high level of performance, students must audition for both participation and chair placement within the ensemble. This process helps cultivate a sense of teamwork and dedication, ultimately leading to a rewarding experience for all percussionists involved.

Concert Choir

The Concert Choir at Lyon College is the college's premier large-group vocal ensemble, welcoming any student eager to learn how to sing. Rehearsals occur during the school day, making it easy for students to participate without interfering with their other classes. Vocal Chamber Ensembles

Vocal Chamber Ensembles provide a unique opportunity for students with advanced musical abilities or interests to explore various genres of music, from Medieval Chant to Vocal Jazz and Acapella. These small groups, typically 4 to 16 members, meet after school one or two days a week to rehearse and develop their skills. Under the guidance of music faculty coaches, students not only learn about ensemble performance but also take on significant leadership roles, enhancing their group interaction and self-discovery. As they progress, these ensembles may earn the chance to showcase their talents at an Honors Recital and even perform as Lyon College Music Ambassadors, giving them a platform to share their passion for music with a broader audience.

Students gain proficiency in one or more of the following three facets of music: performance, theory, and history, and build a portfolio during their music experiences at Lyon. The senior project is a capstone experience for the music major, in which the student assimilates all three facets of the music program. It may be a recital, lecture recital, or lecture.
