Lyon College Sets Annual Burns Night Celebration for Saturday, Feb. 21

Lyon College will celebrate its annual Burns Night on Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Scottish Heritage Building on the Lyon College campus, 2300 Highland Rd., Batesville. The event was originally set for Jan. 24 but rescheduled because of the forecast of inclement weather.

With its roots in the Presbyterian Church, Lyon College embraces its rich Scottish heritage and is proud to be among those who lift up the memory of Robert “Rabbie” Burns by hosting a Burns Night supper and cèilidh.

Burns was an 18th-century Scottish writer who is widely regarded as the poet laureate of Scotland. His ability to synthesize and verbalize the Scottish condition led to his becoming the voice of the Scottish people, and he is remembered for the romanticism and sincerity of his words.

Burns wrote lyrics to traditional Scottish folk tunes, many of which—such as “Auld Lang Syne”—are sung today. Although he died young, his memory lives on through those who gather to celebrate him.

This gala fundraiser for student scholarships will include a dinner of the finest Scottish food and drink, a Scotch whisky tasting, reading of Burns poetry, Scottish country dancing, and music from the Lyon College Pipe Band. Entertainer and bagpipe educator Dr. Patrick Regan will serve as master of ceremonies.

There will be a reception at 6 p.m., with dinner and a program at 7 p.m.

"We hope you will join us for an unforgettable evening of tradition and revelry at our annual Burns Night celebration,” said Jimmy Bell, director of the Scottish Heritage program at Lyon College. “Let the warmth of friendship, the joy of music, and the spirit of Robert Burns fill the air. “Let’s share in the magic of the haggis, the poetry, and the lively company that makes Burns Night a cherished tradition. Slàinte mhath (good health)!"

Tickets are $65 per person or $455 for a table of eight. For tickets,visitwww.lyon.edu/burnsnight.

Arkansas Oral Health Coalition Honors Drew Ramey with Statewide Oral Health Promotion Award

Drew Ramey of the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine has been named the recipient of the 2025 Excellence in Oral Health Promotion – Individual Award by the Arkansas Oral Health Coalition, recognizing his long-standing leadership and impact on oral health initiatives across the state.

The award was announced at the 2025 Oral Health Summit in Little Rock after a competitive nomination and review process conducted by the Arkansas Oral Health Coalition. Excellence in Oral Health Promotion awards honor individuals and organizations that make outstanding contributions to improving oral health in Arkansas.

“For many years, Drew has been a steady, energetic force in efforts to improve oral health throughout Arkansas,” said Caleb Stanton, executive director of the Arkansas Oral Health Coalition. “His leadership, commitment and willingness to work quietly but effectively behind the scenes have shaped the landscape of oral health in our state in significant ways.”

A longtime and active member of the coalition, Ramey has played a key role in advancing initiatives that strengthen oral health programs, expand access to care and build collaborative partnerships statewide. Ramey serves as a strategy adviser for the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine.

“Colleagues consistently describe him as someone who brings people together, builds genuine partnerships, and encourages others to grow and lead with confidence. He prefers to let the work speak for itself or to deflect praise to others, which speaks so well of the genuine heart behind his efforts,” Stanton said.

Among his most notable contributions, Ramey helped advance legislation that set the stage for establishing a dental school in Arkansas, a milestone expected to have a lasting impact on the state’s oral health workforce and access to dental care. He also championed legislation to improve dental services for individuals with special needs, helping ensure more equitable access to quality care.

“Drew embodies the mission and values of the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine,” said Dr. Burke Soffe, founding dean of LCSDM. “His dedication to improving oral health across Arkansas, combined with his humility and collaborative spirit, makes him an extraordinary leader and advocate. This recognition is well deserved, and we are proud to have him as part of our institution.”

"I am very thankful for the recognition from the Oral Health Coalition,” Ramey said. “There are so many people who are trying to make a difference. Helping to create the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine will likely be the most important contribution I will make to the profession of dentistry. This award will be a reminder that I am just one of many over many years who will never rest when it comes to improving oral health."

Lyon College Department of Nursing to Host Clinical Skills Expo on Feb. 2

The Lyon College Department of Nursing will host its first-ever Clinical Skills Expo on Monday, Feb. 2, giving current nursing students a hands-on jump start on clinical patient care while offering area high school students a fun, up-close look at the nursing profession. The event was originally scheduled for Jan. 26 but was rescheduled because of the threat of inclement weather.

The expo will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Lyon College campus and will include approximately 60 visiting high school students, in addition to Lyon College nursing students. The event is designed to provide hands-on training in essential clinical skills required at the beginning of nursing education and practice.

During the expo, participants will rotate through skill-based learning stations focused on foundational patient care techniques. Training will include vital signs, head-to-toe assessments, medical history and patient intake, urinalysis, hand hygiene, bloodborne pathogens, and proper use of personal protective equipment, including donning and doffing sterile gloves. Students will also practice CPR and choking response, learn to recognize warning signs in patients, and gain introductory experience drawing and interpreting blood values.

In addition to technical skills, the expo will emphasize professional nursing knowledge, skills and attitudes, including service learning, ethical standards outlined in the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, HIPAA compliance, cultural and spiritual competence, and professional expectations related to appearance, flexibility, humility and unconditional acceptance.

“The Clinical Skills Expo allows our nursing students to build confidence and competence before entering clinical settings,” said Dr. Rebecca Le, director of nursing education at Lyon College. “By practicing these skills in a supportive, hands-on environment, students are better prepared to begin patient care, while our visiting high school students gain an authentic look at what nursing education involves.”

The event reflects Lyon College’s commitment to experiential learning, clinical excellence and community engagement, while strengthening the pipeline of future healthcare professionals.

For more information about the expo, please contact Dr. Rebecca Le at Rebecca.Le@lyon.edu.

“Black History Month gives students the opportunity to learn from the past, listen to one another, and build stronger connections across our campus and community,” said Dr. Branndii Peterson, executive director of TRIO programs at Lyon College and adviser to the Black Student Association. “Beginning with the MLK Day program, this year’s theme, ‘Mission Possible,’ encourages students to turn reflection into action and play an active role in shaping a more inclusive and engaged campus community.”

Those unable to attend events may still support the Black Student Association through a gift to help fund student programming and initiatives.
